Why Talk Therapy Isn’t Working For You (And What You Need Instead)

Why is talk therapy not working for me?

If talk therapy isn’t working for you, it is likely because traditional therapy keeps you trapped in the analytical mind. Simply talking about trauma brings painful memories to the surface, but without a somatic (body-based) framework to safely process those feelings, your nervous system remains stuck in a loop of fight-or-flight.

Simply talking about something does achieve two basic things. It allows you to be heard, and it brings things to the surface that you may have been unaware of.

But this is only the beginning of a healing journey. It’s a very first, baby step.

The truth is, we incarnate into a physical body to be heard and held: not by another person, but by ourselves. We simply haven’t been taught this imperative truth. Honestly, it feels quite alien to most of us. Even when we are speaking with another person, we are truly only ever speaking with ourselves.

Allow me to explain.

The Danger of Simply Talking

Our psyche is easily divided into three very distinct parts. You don’t need a clinical psychologist to explain them; in fact, I firmly believe seven-year-olds should be taught this in school.

If every breathing human understood their own internal process and didn’t feel the need to outsource their Sacred feelings to an expert the world would be a radically different place. Nobody would be focused on what is “wrong” with them.

The danger of traditional talk therapy is that it often drags experienced trauma up to the surface with absolutely nowhere for it to go. It reignites the very pattern that did the damage in the first place. It leaves the vulnerable parts of you exposed, stranded naked at the top of a flagpole with no safe way down.

The therapist might close their notebook and say, “What a great session,” feeling full of accomplishment, while your soul story is left abandoned and bleeding its way out of their rooms.

This may sound dramatic. I intend for it to.

This kind of exposure without Care is genuinely dangerous. The cells in your body actually believe the traumatic experience has just recurred, and like the initial event, there is nobody there to save them from the danger or despair.

The Three Parts of Your Psyche (And How True Healing Happens)

To actually heal, we must move away from outsourcing our healing to external therapy and instead, turn inward. This inner Work is the only work there really is.

Here is how the three parts of your psyche interact when you finally get out of your own way:

1. The Child:

  • This is where we all begin. When I studied psychology, we were taught this part begins life as a bunch of cells, soaking in its environment like a sun-dried sponge without any filter. But that’s only half the story.

  • This tiny human is already equipped with a unique, Sacred Soul Story, loaded completely within the strands of its DNA. The Child ego state has no critical factor; it simply feels feelings through its chosen instrument, the body.

2. The Parent:

  • This part offers Safety, Security, Nurturing and Nourishment, Protection and Provision, and most essentially, unconditional Love. Because our actual parents were often frail, fraught humans doing the best they could with limited tools, we have to develop our own internal Caregiver.

  • This Parent holds the Organising function of the psyche. Instead of leaving the Child exposed, broken and bleeding on the ground, this part creates a bridge between the intensity of the internal feeling world and moves the Energy-in-motion, emotion, safely to the final part to discern and decide if this requires exposure into the outside world. This is the critical factor the feeling-bodied Child is missing.

  • It is essential that we develop the clear acceptance of all feelings; You Are Allowed, we say. Fear, anger, and love in equal measure. Nothing is suppressed or dissuaded away anymore.

  • The Parent either criticises and judges, or chooses to accept, acknowledge and therefore, compliment and encourage the Child. A very different story begins to be told from that moment on. The decision is arrived at: you have suffered enough and are therefore ready to change. Not away from who you are and wish to be, but directly aligning with it.

3. The Adult:

  • Finally, this healing, caring Energy is delivered to the Adult ego state. This is the authentic part you show up with in the world; the Director.
  • She or He is powerful beyond measure, able to Intuit clearly whatever Life brings because they are actually listening to the messages the Child body brings. When your Adult self hears your body say, I can no longer carry the weight as I did before, it finally learns to Let Go with Love.

Nobody else can bring you to you. All else is falsehood. It’s Time to move beyond the belief that external therapy will heal our wounds for us.

In our work, we’ve got you, right up to the moment you finally have yourself. Because once you learn to get out of your own way, the game of Life begins to be played in all of its colours, mysteries, and miracles.

Feeling Worthy and Deserving is the planned landing point.

When you’re ready to begin, we’ve got you.

Elements of Life Online dives deeper into these ego states and offers a proven framework, a bridge, to navigate your inner landscape in each and every moment.
