How to Get Out of Fight or Flight… (And Why You Are Stuck)

When I am asked this question I am always acutely aware of the desperation in the wording.

Get Out…

It is extremely unnatural to get out of something until you have become intimately aware of why you are there in the first place. So, let us begin there, shall we?

A better, more useful question may be: Why am I allowing my body, the vessel I use to live Life through, to want to fight or flight?

What Are You Wishing to Escape From?

Once answered, we may begin to unpack the soul strategy to correct the situation. Try the below sentence completion:

  • What am I fighting?
  • What am I needing to flee?

Deeper, for those Bravehearts who really want to know:

  • Why am I fighting?
  • Why am I needing to flee?

Only when these pivotal questions are able to be answered honestly do we have our beginning point, our anchor, so to speak.

The Body is the Firing Line

Now, let us speak to the body. It is our initial and our final resting place. Life happens energetically first, this Energy transmutes to motion – emotion – and it is finally felt through the densest of cell sets, the body.

Nothing of consequence in your Life happens outside of it. What is making you put it on the line, the firing line, quite literally?

So, instead of getting your body out of fight or flight, firstly ask, where is the fire? Is the wildebeest truly at your door to eat the children? Mostly the answer would be no.

However, you have trained your body to believe that this sense of danger and urgency is normal. It is not. It is however pathologised. Why? Because it makes billions of dollars. That’s why.

Is it necessary? No.

Is it helpful? No.

Is it right? No.

Yet here we are.

Replacing “Anxiety” with “Disconnect”

We are sending messages to our body, every minute of every day. We are telling and therefore teaching our body what those feelings are, and yet rarely, what they mean.

When I say that they are mostly false flags, please do not feel I am minimising the experienced and felt situation. You have constructed it to be real. Your body, on its own has absolutely no critical factor. It is a Child of feeling. That is the body’s only job, to feel.

We have loaded it with encumbered expectations, impossible to ever be reached, and wonder where the anxiety has come from. Anxiety, too, has become an overused and minimising construct.

Let us today, do away with the word. Let us replace it instead with disconnect.

Bringing Your Body Back Down to Earth

Now, take a moment to reconnect to your body, it is a Sacred Truth Teller. Closing down your eyes, take a few rounds of gentle, slow, deep breaths.

Our work then really, is not to get out of our experience, but to truly be there for it, present within it. In our practice we say, It is only when one has suffered enough that they may finally be ready for change.

It is not easy, as nothing worthwhile is. However, it is ever so Simple.

Talking your beautiful body out of the tall tree is only useful when you know why you climbed it in the first place. Are you ready to bring it back down to earth? Have you been frightened, fighting and fleeing from an intruder that you have created with your own mindscape?

When you can be honest about that, we are ready to begin.
